What a fantastic week we had at MakerWorld Huddersfield for Off Script: Youth Power Week.
From metal sculpture to filmmaking, music production and powerful workshops on human rights from Chol Theatre, and playful inflatable workshops with Mimi Dearing it was a celebration of creativity, confidence and collaboration, ending on a real high with a cracking weekend sharing event and a young band from Wakefield performing their first ever gig.
Moments like these show just how vital it is to bring accessible, high-quality arts experiences right into the heart of our town centres. When young people can create, perform and connect in familiar public spaces, it brings new energy and a sense of ownership back to the high street, exactly where it should be.
Huddersfield town centre is changing and we’re excited that culture is near the top of the Kirklees Council‘s agenda. We’re so proud to be part of this story, helping to keep creativity woven into the fabric of the town. And we’re keen to build on this energy, developing this accessible, high street arts model in other places too. Every event we do like this brings us closer to our aim of a permanent children’s art gallery space in (we can dream) every town centre.
A big thank you to Studio Bokehgo for the brilliant photography (and a great workshop) and, as ever, to Arts Council England for its continued support in making opportunities like this possible.
