Our two new residencies – chosen by children

We’re delighted to announce two new artist residencies and this time, it’s the children in charge of the selection process.

After meeting the shortlisted artists, children, all MakerWorld regulars, cast their votes.

The artists – Brutalust Interactive Studios (Maria Sappho & Colin Frank) and Abigail Horn – will take up their residencies in September and October.

Brutalust Interactive Studios will invite families into a Sound Hunt,  an experimental, interactive sonic installation where children change the soundscape using custom-made controllers and discover playful sound sculptures hidden in a fabric maze.

Abi Horn will transform the space into a series of “playable” art installations, using modular open-ended materials and projection. Her work asks, “What happens when art is for everyone and children lead the way in creative exploration?”

All of the artists were so brave in letting the children decide their fate but part of their residency involves interacting and involving the visitors so this artistic bravery is crucial. Both projects encourage intergenerational creativity and blur the lines of who gets to make and experience art and we’re really excited about that.

Families and children will be invited to watch, contribute and see the artists’ work develop day by day. This process builds on the legacy of previous MakerWorld projects like Intergalactic Space Jungle, centering children as not just visitors but makers, collaborators and curators.
