Interested in our groups and want to know more about us and what we will be doing in the coming term? Read on!

What we have been doing:

Despite a year of lockdown we have been incredibly busy in 2020-2021. We have developed and delivered 8300 art packs to children across Kirklees as part of council funded schemes to support children and families. We have been developing Our Biennale which was postponed from autumn 2020 and started in schools across Kirklees in January 2021 with celebration events planned for June 2021. We are developing the family programme for Woven in Kirklees, also for June 2021, and have been working on commissions from Kirklees Libraries and Kirklees Museums to develop and deliver programmes in 2021-22.

Huddersfield Literature Festival lanterns:

A big thank you to those of you who made lanterns for Huddersfield Literature Festival and well done to our young artists Frances and Annabel who made an appearance on Look North!

The coming term:

We have lots of exciting projects happening next term linked to Our Biennale www.ourbiennale.org which The Children’s Art School delivers for Evoke (Kirklees Cultural Education Partnership).

The children at TCAS will be creating collaborative large scale sculptures inspired by the work of artist Joanna Vasconcelos, who is currently exhibiting at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

We will be experimenting with lots of different processes and materials. The Saturday senior groups (11+) will be creating the largescale structures for this project with artist Dave Young http://www.trans-mutation.com/. Please note that these Saturday senior sessions will take place at our Maker World space in Huddersfield town centre for at least 5 weeks starting from 17th April. Monday seniors will make slightly smaller scale structures with me in the studio at Holmfirth Tech. All other groups will meet at Holmfirth Tech as usual.

The artworks created will be exhibited as an installation at MakerWorld as part of the Our Biennale and Woven in Kirklees celebrations from June 19th 2021.

Another exciting Our Biennale project we are delivering alongside Kirklees Museums and Kirklees Culture Declares is part of the global project withNature2020. The drawing of the cuckoo by our young TCAS artists Tia and Frances was chosen by writer Rob Cowen to become our giant image, the Kirklees cuckoo, which will be created at Stirley Community Farm on May 22nd. Our Senior art groups will help to create the image using clothes donated by youth groups, schools and individuals. We will be letting you know what colours you can donate.

If you work with any youth groups or would like your child’s school to get involved please signpost them to the information here https://evokekirklees.org/creating-the-giant-kirklees-cuckoo-a-withnature2020-project/  where they can register for our information event on 14th April at 4pm.

Drawings of birds by our art school children and those from children from all across Kirklees will be exhibited at MakerWorld on May 22nd.

We can’t wait to get going in the studio- fingers crossed for a smoother term!
