A new skatepark for Huddersfield

As part of our commitment to cultural offers for young people in Kirklees, we are opening a skatepark in the former Toyland space in the Piazza Centre.

MakerSkate will offer summer sessions from 30th July and run every Tuesday from 12-4 until the end of August. On launch day skaters and non-skaters will be able to take part in a T-shirt-making session in the MakerWorld space and help create artwork for the skate ramps.

The park will then open for open skate sessions in the evenings from September.

MakerSkate is spearheaded by passionate entrepreneur Kierhardy Ansell, who has created similar successful projects, most notably Skate It Yourself at Orange Box in Halifax, supported by Calderdale Council and the local police force.

From daytime lessons catering to all skill levels, to open-skate sessions in the evenings, MakerSkate will blend visual art, fashion and music.

Led by an experienced team, dedicated to empowering young people through positive engagement, the skatepark ensures a safe and supportive environment.

We are delighted to be working with Skate it Yourself who do such great work with young people in Calderdale. This new space will draw more children and families into our vibrant community. We know that participating in MakerWorld improves the wellbeing of entire families, and we are dedicated to expanding our offerings to ensure that children in Huddersfield can experience a broad cultural education, including music and the arts.

We recognise the right of children to rest, leisure, play, cultural life and the arts. By developing this space, we are creating a rich cultural community where every child can thrive.

MakerSkate will champion mental health and community benefits associated with skateboarding, promoting resilience and inclusivity among participants. It will also provide a welcoming space within the town centre for young people already in dire need of a safe provision as well as developing a visual arts offering for the skating community.
